Mustansiriya Madrasa

Mustansiriyah Madrasa is a historic educational institution in Baghdad, Iraq. It was founded in 1227 by the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mustansir. It served as a center for Islamic learning and scholarship during the medieval period. The madrasa features stunning architecture typical of the Abbasid era, with intricate tilework, arched doorways, and geometric patterns. Visitors can explore its courtyard, prayer halls, and classrooms, appreciating the rich history and cultural significance of this ancient institution. You do need a ticket to enter. 

Abbasid Palace

The Abbasid Palace, also known as the Palace of the Golden Gate, is a symbol of Baghdad’s past as the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. Located on the eastern bank of the Tigris River, this grand palace complex once served as the seat of power for the Abbasid rulers. While much of the original structure has been lost to time and conflict, visitors can still marvel at the remnants of its architecture, including ornate gates, intricate carvings, and expansive courtyards.

Iraqi National Museum

The Iraqi National Museum houses Iraq’s rich cultural heritage with  an extensive collection of artifacts spanning thousands of years of history. From Mesopotamian antiquities to Islamic art and artifacts, the museum takes you on a journey through  Iraq’s diverse cultural legacy. 

Martyr Monument

The Martyr Monument, also known as the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, is a tribute to the fallen heroes of Iraq. Located in Baghdad’s Al-Shaheed Monumental Area, the monument has two big, beautiful turquoise arches with names written inside.There’s also a small museum below that isn’t always open. Like most historic sites, a ticket to enter is required. It costs around $17 USD to enter.

Mutanabbi Street

Mutanabbi Street is a bustling cultural hub in Baghdad, known for its vibrant book market and lively atmosphere. Named after the famous classical Arab poet Al-Mutanabbi, the street is lined with bookstores, cafes, and cultural institutions, bringing in intellectuals, writers, and book lovers from the city. It’s a street you can’t miss as a tourist. It’s a great place to pick up a book, some souvenirs, grab a tea, and people watch. You’ll want to make sure you visit the one and only, Shabandar Cafe.

Alreef Cafe

Alreef Cafe is a popular gathering spot in Baghdad, known for its relaxed ambiance. It’s one of my favorite cafes because it’s cozy, brings in a cool crowd, and has great coffee/desserts.

Karada

This area is known as the livelier and happening area. You’ll find lots of restaurants, upscale cafes, and places to hang out. Don’t sleep on the coffee shop game here. You’ll find really trendy cafes that make specialty drinks like your lavender lattes and even have western deserts. People will be playing board games here, getting together for meetings, or simply hanging out. 

Al Mansur Mall

Al Mansur Mall is one of Baghdad’s premier shopping destinations, offering a wide range of retail outlets, dining options, and entertainment facilities. Located in the upscale Al-Mansur district, the mall boasts a modern design and spacious interior, providing a comfortable shopping experience for visitors. From international fashion brands to local boutiques, shoppers can find everything from clothing and accessories to electronics and home goods. Additionally, the mall features a food court, cinema complex, and recreational activities, making it a popular destination for families and friends to spend leisure time.

Ridha Alwan

This place has a total vibe. You have to come here for the aesthetics but also for the pistachio latte. I’ve literally never had anything like this anywhere else. If there’s one thing you have to do, it’s grab a pistachio latte. Inside the cafe, it’s a great vibe and it’s always full. The entire place just takes me elsewhere.
